NATIONAL VEGETARIAN WEEK · 1–7 OCTOBER — A timely opportunity to rethink, refresh and celebrate your vegetarian offering.
We’re here to make it easier for restaurants, cafés and hospitality venues to get it right — the labelling, the kitchen practice, the confidence at the table.
Simple, practical, no jargon.
Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans is an independent guidance initiative for food venues. We assess restaurants, cafés, hotels and catering businesses against a practical set of criteria and provide free practical guidance for kitchen teams and front-of-house staff, and paid services for venues that want more hands-on support.
We are not a membership organisation, a lobbying group or a certification body. We are a straightforward, independent resource — honest about what we look for, clear with our feedback, and focused on helping venues improve.
We also offer paid services for venues that want more hands-on support with menus, ingredients and staff training.
Everything we offer starts with free guidance. From there, venues can get free personalised feedback through our questionnaire, or go further with our paid services
Not affiliated with any manufacturer, supplier or lobbying organisation.
Guidance that's easy to understand and simple to put into action.
Supporting venues of all sizes and all types of service.
Small changes in the right places make a big difference.
We believe thoughtful choices should be easier to make, better supported, and more widely recognised — for guests and for the venues that serve them.
This is the belief that sits behind everything we do.
Not a world without choice — a world where thoughtful choices are easier to make, better supported, and more widely recognised.
We do this by:
Sharing clear, approachable guidance that supports well-informed choices and grows confidence over time.
Supporting businesses to create welcoming, inclusive experiences where vegetarian and vegan guests feel they belong.
Highlighting small, realistic changes that motivate progress and build confidence — for venues and guests alike.
Being a trusted, independent voice: not affiliated with any manufacturer, supplier or lobbying organisation.
Our approach is practical, fair and focused on what matters to your guests. Here’s how the assessment and rating process works.
Practical articles covering the five areas that matter most. Read, learn, act. No sign-up needed.
Complete our short questionnaire and receive a clear, private picture of what your venue is doing well and where the quick wins are.
For venues that want to go further — menu reviews, staff training and menu development tailored to your venue.
Feedback isn’t a judgement — it’s an opportunity to improve. Most venues find that the recommendations are practical, achievable and straightforward to put into practice.
Learn more about Suitable For Vegetarians, how our assessment works, and how we help businesses provide a better experience for vegetarian customers.
Suitable For Vegetarians is an independent assessment service that helps hospitality businesses demonstrate the quality of their vegetarian offering. Our aim is to make it easier for customers to identify venues that genuinely cater for vegetarian diets.
Restaurants, cafés, pubs, hotels, caterers, event venues and other food businesses can all apply. Whether you’re an independent venue or part of a larger group, our assessment is designed to recognise good vegetarian practices.
No. Businesses do not need to serve an entirely vegetarian menu. We assess how well vegetarian customers are catered for, including menu variety, preparation methods, ingredient transparency and customer confidence.
Most businesses can complete the online questionnaire in around 10–15 minutes. Once submitted, our team reviews the information and aims to provide your assessment outcome within two working days.
Absolutely. If improvements are recommended, you can make the suggested changes and apply for a reassessment. Our goal is to support businesses in continually improving their vegetarian offering rather than a one-time review.
This follows exactly the same structure as the rest of your templates, keeps all the content editable in ACF, and allows you to add unlimited FAQs by simply adding another row in the repeater.
There are an estimated 3.5 million vegetarians and vegans in the UK. For many of them, eating out involves a level of uncertainty that meat-eating guests rarely experience — uncertainty about what is in a dish, how it was prepared, whether the kitchen actually keeps things separate, and whether the person at the table can answer a simple question with confidence.
Most are closer to getting this right than they think. The gap is usually not indifference but a lack of clear, practical information — about ingredients, about kitchen processes, about what vegetarian and vegan guests actually experience when something goes wrong.
This initiative exists to close that gap. To give venues the tools to get it right. And to give guests a way to find the venues that have.
We do not require venues to offer exclusively vegetarian or vegan menus. We work with mixed venues — and believe that a restaurant serving meat can still provide an excellent experience for vegetarian and vegan guests, if it chooses to.
We are not affiliated with any food manufacturer, ingredient supplier, lobbying organisation or trade body. Our assessments are independent and our guidance is based on publicly available information from the Food Standards Agency, the Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society.
We do not sell advertising or sponsored content. A venue’s listing on this site reflects our assessment of it — nothing else.
